CHAPTER 8
HUSBAND
The morning after my bath, Sebastian is gone when I open my eyes again.
I call his name, only to get an echo of my own voice in answer. Squinting in the faint orange light of the torches heâs left burning for me, I search for his silhouette and find nothing. Heâs definitely missing from this part of the cave.
Huh. I wonder why.
If it isnât for this feeling of certainty I have, Iâd think that he left me. It might not be the same sensation as Aria describedâshe made it seem like carrying the soul of Ariadne around with her was like having a conscience you can actually hearâbut I know it deep in my gut. This is the man for me. My soulmate. Thereâs a tie between us that has lasted for centuries. Though weâve only met again a handful of days ago, I get the vibe that Sebastianâs in it for life.
That doesnât mean that I have to spend every waking minute with the guy. I like him, and getting to know a bit more about him yesterday was awesome, but Iâve never been one of those girls who needs to be constantly admired, forever adored. I got enough of that when I was a teen in Portland. I was over it long before I came to the Other. For me, happiness was solitude in my cottage home and my hands busy creating something thatâs both beautiful and useful.
Kind of like me.
And, sure, I might be missing my cozy cottage a little. It was a shame to leave all of my pottery supplies behind, and I canât help but wonder what Ariaâs doing right now. I try not to worry about her too much. She mightâve been my only friend in Delphi, but she has loads. Miss Popularity, right?
Still, thinking about Sebastianâwhere is he?âI only hope that Aria is reunited with her hero sooner than later.
She deserves the same happiness Iâve found.
Having a soulmate is a most excellent thing. Thereâs this feeling of rightness, of completion that settles over me just knowing that Sebastian is mine. Even though the pallet we share is currently empty of him, I know without really knowing why that heâll be back because, if heâs mine, that means Iâm also his.
Besides, I already know that he believes weâre meant to be with his whole heart. Heâll definitely be back.
Sure, we have our problems. What new couple doesnât? I mean, I still donât know what he looks like, and thereâs the little matter of us being in the middle of our story hanging over our heads. I might not have been a scholar or anything when it comes to Greek mythology, but Iâve learned a lot over the seasons; when itâs our lives on the line, we all do. Everyone in Delphi shares what they know, and the biggest takeaway I got out of all of the stories is that they never really end on a good note.
And if they do? Itâs only because
